Life's Meaning and Purpose

QUESTION

“I have begun reading your series of books on the near-death experience as I’ve lately been struggling greatly with sense of purpose and belief.

“I recently retired (semi) at the age of 35.  I’ve been extremely successful, but since “retiring” it all seems pointless.  Money and security, that is. . . I’ve found myself only placing importance on what my purpose is here, and finding that.  The feeling of finding purpose is directly related to there having to be something beyond this life.

“My mom gave me your book Coming Back to Life, and I feel it is starting to help me, along with meditation, to find any answers that are available.

“I was wondering if you have any further suggestions/guidance beyond your books, as I plan on reading all of them, and/or if you will be speaking anywhere in the near future as I have failed to find any type of speaking schedule.  As I send this, I realize you have posted on your paper your next speaking event.  But any further guidance is appreciated.”.....Matt

ANSWER

Oh my goodness.  Dear Matt, I could talk to you for hours, lead you in a whole bunch of exercises and experiences and meditations and mindfulness - walks and laughter.

Purpose?  Hey, we all deal with that to one extent or another in our lives, even when we’re certain of the answer.  Sometimes several times, as faith can wane when seemingly overpowered.

M-m-m-m-m-m, well, here are a few books of mine that might help:
 FUTURE MEMORY
 A MANUAL FOR DEVELOPING HUMANS
DYING TO KNOW YOU:  PROOF OF GOD IN THE NEAR-DEATH
  EXPERIENCE
WE LIVE FOREVER:  THE REAL TRUTH ABOUT DEATH
THE BIG BOOK OF NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES
NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES:  THE REST OF THE STORY
My newest:  THE FOREVER ANGELS:  NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES

You might also enjoy looking around my website.  It is filled with many features - www.pmhatwater.com.  There are YouTube Playlists, special sections, The Marketplace (no one pays a penny for being listed), and a section for my Free Monthly Newsletter, plus Archive of past issues.  Warning:  this newsletter is only for the curious.  I mean really curious!  You never know what subjects may be covered, and I don’t know either until the last minute.

For what seems to bother you, read the first two mentioned here, especially the MANUAL.  Hold it in your hands.  All the basics are in it for knowing who you are and being the best you can be, making sense of life.  You do not “read” this Manual.  You use it.  I mean that.  It was not written to uplift anyone; rather, to enable you to live every moment of every day with curiosity, joy, and purpose.  Sometimes inspiration is not enough.  Sometimes what we need is a good kick in the butt.  That’s why this is a Manual.

Life has meaning and purpose, every day of it, no matter how long we live or what we do.  Even you feeling the pits right now, has purpose.  This despair is what will inspire you to do different things, to knock on doors you would normally walk right past--ignoring what is there.  We need highs and lows, blind alleys, intersections, trash cans.  Otherwise we would never recognize whatever path suddenly lights up or we get thrown into.  Here’s what you may try:  attend either a Unity Church (they are everywhere) or a Center for Spiritual Living (used to be called Religious Science or Science of Mind---all based on the writings of Ernest Holmes).  These are both metaphysical churches/centers and they have exciting programs.  One of the best things I did after I died was to attend a Church of Religious Science and take their first year class, then called SOM-1.  I learned here how to use my mind, how to think and speak in ways beyond what I was used to.  The class I attended then is now available online.  You might inquire through www.csl.org.

Get busy, Matt.  You have been gifted with time and boredom.  How lucky can anyone get?  That’s “fodder” for your next big leap.  For fun, subscribe to my free monthly newsletter “for the curious.”  You do so by accessing my website then flipping over to Newsletter.  There is an Archive of previous issues.  A list of current talks and appearances is always on the front page of my website.

 Many blessings, PMH
